Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

One of a series of eight photos contributed by Peter Brooks whose paternal parents and grandparents lived in the St Mary's Road area of Hornsey.
This picture shows Peter's cousin outside his grandparent's house.
The victorian housing in the whole area was demolished in 1966. Those houses that were privately owned were compulsorily purchased. The area was built over with low rise flats and houses, all offered as council houses.
The excerpt from the Ordnance Survey map of 1952 shows the roads.

Were these houses in poor repair when demolished like the ones on Park Road or would they have still been in good nick today?

The story of the St Mary’s estate shares a common history the Campsbourne and in Abyssinia (Hornsey Vale) estates. Like the Ladder the land was bought by the British Land Company and sold off in plots. The original aim of the developments was associated with enfranchisement. However, as it turned out, the houses quickly became let and their condition did deteriorate. As to whether the demolition was the right choice, I can’t say. They certainly needed attention of some sort. Today, no doubt, they would be renovated. My book Abyssinia: Hornsey’s Lost Village tells the story of the very similar estate at Hornsey Vale, also referncing the Birkbeck, St Mary’s and Campsbourne estates.

My parents lived in St Mary’s rd when my siblings were small, my siblings would all be in the seventies now. My parents name was Bainbridge, Hilda and Norman if anyone knew them? I also think Lillian lydiate may have lived there. Eileen
