Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Queens Head & Premier Electric Cinema, circa 1910
In 1794 Harringay's first pub, the 'Queen's Head', was established as a road tavern. Well situated for visitors to Alexandra Palace in later years, it also had a tea garden. When it was modernised in 1898, the builders found a solid gold ring with an inset emerald from the 14th century. The ring was given to the British Museum where it still is today.

The cinema shown was also known as the Regal Cinema in the 1950's. Anyone know what happened to the snack bar that used to be known as the savaloy stool, it was on the corner of Duckets Common at Turnpike Lane and Willoughby Road..

We must have been just about contemporaries Reginald. I lived at 86 Frobisher. just up from the Regal from 46 to 64. And I used that shack for snacks, especially his hot dogs! I recall it being painted orange and it looked like a former railway truck. The QH was my father's haunt.

I lived in Fairfax from 1946- 59 then moved to nearer Finsbury Park at the end of Wightman Road. That snack bar yes it was painted orange, we used to call it the savaloy stall and we were there regularly manly Friday nights when we finished work for the weekend. We used to meet on our scooters then later in our cars. I've been actually moved out of London since the end of 1970 and moved to Stevenage.

I think Mr Summers that you and I must have crossed paths ate some time. I was biker - 500 AJS mainly - but some of my best friends used scooters! I left Harringay in 1964 and have wandered about a bit; now in a retirement flat in Halstead, Essex.

Hello you must remember Brookers Motorcycle's a few doors along to the left of where you worked. My mate was David Brooker from school to teenage years, he was in our group of mods on scooters but he came with Triumph motorcycle and stieb sidecar but later change to a Vespa GS 150. Those in our group were Johnny Daniels, Brian Hagger, Brian Kingsley, Trevor Aubrey, Raymond Bird, Robert Slack Michael Taylor then a little later Derek Chard and he's cousin name escapes me at the moment. You must know some of them.

I just thought my older brother was a rocker he had a Triumph Speed twin in maroon you may have knocked about with him and his group it was at the same time as my group does he ring a bell ?

Could be - the maroon Speed Twin was the one the cops used. I do recall the surname so what was his first name?

Just seen you other mail - yes; a few names there that ring bells! When I gave up biking in 1963 I tried to get Brookers to take my old AJS 500 - no luck. I went via a dealer in Edmonton. As I recall I got £50 for it which given i only paid 80 wasn't bad. Never saw the money - owed to me mother for her Hillman Minx!

Yes you're right the police did use those bikes, he later sold it and he bought an ex army WLA Harley Davidson. It had the hand gears on the tank and a foot clutch for a fiver. He stripped it all down and had it repainted in black and ivory, he added a leather cowboy seat with metal studs and chrome it looks a treat. I've had to rewrite this, I deleted it by mistake trying to add a photo of my brother and a mate at the Isle of Man TT Races with his first bike a Triumph Tiger Club. I'll have another got at load it

Hello Richard I've just realised that before I accidentally deleted my last comment to you, I did have my brother's name on there but failed to add it when I rewrote it. So here it is his name was John (Johnny) does that help you to know if you knew him.
