Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A view through the empty shop window of a branch of J Sainsbury on High Road, Wood Green, London. A sign in the window welcomes customers, both old and new, despite the shortages. Through the door can be seen two customers doing their shopping.

I remember my mother and I going into this J Sainsbury shop buying butter in the late 50's.

I remember this shop well. My mum liked Sainsbury's because the service was better than some of the other shops - bless her, she was a bit of a snob!

Perhaps later, this shop had bentwood chairs for the elders to sit on or rest the shopping bags while being served. Mum used to say that I was not to sit on them, they were not for children!

For those in search of nostalgia I visiting the W Plumb butchers shop on Hornsey Road during Open House which features a wonderful conserved and restored interior.

I remember going here with my mum in the 60s. A long room with counters on each side, I remember it having mosaic pictures on the walls behind of what that particular part of the counter was selling. The ladies behind the counters wore white hair nets.
