Interesting to think that a device which by the 40/50ss had become ubiquitous once had to be sold like new technology... oh, yes, well it was!

Hmm. we got our ubiquitous device in 1968. They existed before this of course, but that was when we could afford one, there were various colours although I don't believe black was one?

I don't know how I missed the original post, and I never knew this, or such places existed. As all telephone equipment was rental only then I expect it was more of a showroom. Interesting display of 162/232 and candlestick 160 phones. Also a display of 2-motion selectors on the right to demonstrate call switching, plus switchboards and an A B callbox.
