Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This poster/flyer is from one of two concerts that Pink Floyd played at the legendary mid-century Wood Green music venue, the Fishmongers Arms.

Floyd's first appearance was the one advertised in this poster. They also played at the same venue as a late replacement on January 10th 1969 after Jimi Hendrix pulled out. By June that year Pink Floyd were themselves headlining the Royal Albert Hall.

The set list seems to have been lost, but various spots on the web suggest a list that sounds very much like a live version of Side 1 one of my favourite teen albums, Ummagumma.

It included:

  • "Astronomy Domine"
  • "Careful With That Axe Eugene"
  • "Interstellar Overdrive"
  • "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun"
  • "A Saucerful of Secrets"

The third track wasn't on the album.

Their early music was quite distinct from their better known later work.

Hugh D.......don't be "insanely jealous".  As compensation you're still young...(ish) !  But the big name bands of the time used to appear all over those small venues.  Just try and imagine the likes of Clapton, Ginger Baker, Townshend, Moon, etc,etc playing in pub rooms.....brilliant stuff.  Even saw Hendrix play one of his earliest gigs in back room of a pub in Golders Green..think it was The Refectory ??  Musicians galore in that audience !    And of course Ally Pally had it's fair share of gigs in the 60's.......14 hour Technicolour Dreams or Happenings, early Pink Floyd amongst them, and a then idol of mine John Lennon, brushed past me.................!!!  So much going on.   But Kevin Nairn, I didn't "leave out" Dave Clark. I chose to omit them.....not our thing really. They used to occasionally turn up at South Grove SM School where they were real friendly with our caretaker.

Hugh D.........I possibly did see The Action somewhere along the line, maybe as a backing band ??  But can't say I remember them.  Sorry.

Key question is: was Syd playing? They are performing as ‘Pink Floyd’ rather than ‘The Pink Floyd’ and still showcasing ‘Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ which was Syd Era, but I’m guessing that Dave Gilmour had taken his place. Or were they both there? I guess we can ask DG. Either way, an absolute collector’s item of a gig!

Early tryout for Ummagumma material. Suggests that Dave Gilmour was on stage!

I would've thought Syd was there Andy.  If not then I definitely saw him somewhere, maybe The Roundhouse or a college gig ..........??   You're mentioning of 'The' in band title reminds me of early advertising which had us scratching our heads a bit......"Pink Floyd" ??  What's that all about...?   We soon found out.

As mentioned by others, Fishmongers Hall was a fabulous casual venue where some great musicians could be seen at short notice for minimal ticket prices. In my teenage years (1963-1968) I often went to the Hall at weekends and saw some of the famous trad jazz bands of the time. But I particularly remember the regular sessions of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers featuring the emerging talent of Eric Clapton. The Bluesbreakers were always in continuous "reconstruction" and at times also featured John McVie, Jack Bruce, Peter Green etc. Amazing to be able to see all this talent in a local hall. Happy Days!

Yes Patrick.....absolutely amazing to think of such gigs taking place now.  But back in the day it was just taken for granted eh !   My older Brother made me aware of The Fishmongers as being a good trad jazz venue and the trends moved on from there.  I remember there was a really decent 'bloke on the door'.
