Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This was an early Floyd performance, by a band with more local connections than I ever realised.

Formed in 1963 as Sigma 6 the band quickly went through several names, including the Meggadeaths, the Abdabs and the Screaming Abdabs, Leonard's Lodgers, and the Spectrum Five, before settling on the Tea Set.

Roger Waters and Nick Mason moved into a flat at 39 Stanhope Gardens, Highgate in London, owned by Mike Leonard (hence the Leonard's Lodgers name), a part-time tutor at the nearby Hornsey College of Art and the Regent Street Polytechnic. Mason moved out after the 1964 academic year, and the guitarist Bob Klose moved in during September 1964. Before long the guitarist Syd Barrett, a childhood friend of Waters, joined Klose and Waters at Stanhope Gardens.

Leonard seems to have got the band gigs at both the Regent Street Poly and the Hornsey College of Art.

In late 1965, the band was renamed to Pink Floyd Sound. Qiouet soon, they began to get paid bookings, including a performance at the Marquee Club in March 1966. On 15 October 1966, the band made their major debut at the Roundhouse under that name. A month later, on November 18, 1966, they played at the Horney College of Art.

Fantastic! Loved the list of names, I had no idea. I went there for foundation and was due to go to Ally Pally but had another year in Crouch End due to the fire. One of the reasons I chose Hornsey already Middx Poly by the time I went was its connection to cool stuff, notably the '68 occupation. Not the best reason to choose a college I grant you, but the awkward 'enfant terrible' vibe lived on.
