Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Not having been brought up it’s these parts, I couldn't recognise where this photo was taken from and started to doubt that it was even Wood Green High Road. But I've been able to confirm that it is. The photographer was standing a few feet south of where the pedestrian bridge crosses between the two parts of the Mall today, The Google maps embed below is the closest I could get to the location.

Another great photograph, my dad used to take me and my brother to the old Co-op store when we were kids. It was like stores in the West End, really large.

Another great photo. I’m old enough to remember the Co-op; happy memories of my childhood days and shopping that end of Wood Green with my mum and dad.

My Dad always said the architect must’ve had some sort of grudge against society when designing the new building.

Coming home from St Angela’s I would walk through both Co-Op buildings, drift around the record department then continue down Green Lanes to Bon Marche at Turnpike Lane, which in those days was quite ‘out there’ with fashion.

Bartons!! Now there’s a Wood Green department store name!

And here's the store for you, Lydia.

Now I had an instant problem with the first image which is not one of Wood Green I recall from 1961. I left the area in 64. That Co-Op is not anything I recall from Wood Green High Road.  And looking at the image Hugh has offered I am even more convinced; there seems no room for it. And where is the wide pavement that was such a feature of the west side of the high road?

Are we sure that it is not Ealing Broadway? There was a huge Co-op there in the 60s.
