I like the Times correspondent's sceptical asides on the 'ceremony'. Indeed why should the much put-upon ratepayers pay for a dejeuner, or even a Food Festival, which is for the benefit of others?

I should think the amount of £94,600 spent in setting up the park was very much on their minds. measuringworth.com gives the following values at today's prices:

£6,774,988.59 using the retail price index.
£56,794,736.93 using average earnings.

A substantial sum but worth every penny if, as Sir John hoped, these Prebendal acres of Meanwood continue to be as conducive to the moral improvement of society as to the invigoration of our workman and servant class.
