Old Baptist Chapel, Crouch End c1900

In the late nineteenth century, if you'd stood at the spot which is now just outside the door to Midgleys, looking away from Broadway, this is what you'd have been looking at. The wall on the left of the picture is pretty much exactly where Midgleys shop front now is.

Crouch End chapel, afterwards Broadway Hall, was opened by Baptists in 1806. The later Broadway Hall was used in turn by Congregationalists, by Anglicans during the rebuilding of St. Mary's, and again by Baptists from 1879 until the opening of Ferme Park chapel in 1889.

The hall had once been a farm building of Crouch Hall. In 1851 Gothic windows and a short tower with a cupola were added

A fire in 1923 led to its demolition in 1925. Its site was covered by the forecourt of Hornsey town hall.
