Many thanks to HoL member Arthur Astrop for sending me this wonderful picture of a class at North Harringay School in 1936. Arthur's cousin John is in the rear row, third for the right wearing the double-breasted blazer. Sadly John died last year.
You can read Arthur's memories of Harringay in the 1920's and 1930's in his HoL blogs here.

Arthur adds:
Empire Day was started in 1902, and was celebrated every year on May 24 until (I think) it was superseded by Commonwealth Day. In the 1930s it was an occasion when the entire school was assembled to march around the playground, waving Union Jacks and singing patriotic songs. One of the girls (not necessarily the prettiest but certainly the one with the most 'presence'!), was selected to be dressed as Britannia and to march in the middle of the procession. There was no such honourable position for a lad, to the chagrin of me and my mates!
