Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Mum and me beside the New River.

Northumberland House (built c1822) was a private mental hospital that backed onto the river.

Prior to the demolition, to make way for the Rowley Gardens estate, the hospital stood empty for several years and became our playground.

Hi Roy, I love this photo and the memories you have shared about Northumberland House Mental Hospital in different posts across the site. I am inviting people to bring photographs/record memories of the Hospital at Bruce Castle Museum on 14th May, as part of the museum's Local History Fair.

Would you be interested in coming along and sharing /recording some of these memories?  The idea is to record and house memories within the Museum's permanent archive and for the soundbites to be used in the audio for a theatrical production about Vivienne Haigh-Wood Eliot and her final years at the Hospital. The theatre production will be hosted by the BCM in October 2022.

It would be great to see you there.

Meanwhile, would you be happy for me to use some of your entries on this site in my talk on the 14th?

Looking forward to discussing further.

All the best, Donna.

Hello Donna, thank you for taking the time to look at my memories of the New River and Northumberland House. They played a large part of my childhood.

I now live down in sunny Sussex and as I’m still working, unable to get up to good old London.

I’m very happy for you to use any of all of my postings and images - I hope they are of some interest.
Congratulation on the project, very best wishes for every success.
Regards,
Roy

Hi Roy, Many thanks for your reply and for allowing me to use your memories of Northumberland House for the project.

It would be lovely to have a recording of you reading some of these wonderful memories - not sure how we could do that remotely, but if there is any possibility of arranging a Zoom meeting or similar, do let me know: d.m.fitzgerald2008@outlook.com

Many thanks again and I hope Sussex continue to shine!

Best regards,

Donna.
