Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

"Montague Burton The Tailor of Taste" grille, Topsfield Parade

I felt sure that the Burton grille came up quite recently on another photo, but blowed if I can find it. Anyway, as a result of that recent phantom comment, I snapped a photo of the grille at 14 Topsfield Parade (now Gift) as we were passing yesterday.

Looking at it when I got home, I saw a small "Montague" in the upper left hand corner of the grille. A quick Google tells me that "Montague Burton" was the original name of the store in the first decade of the twentieth century, after its founder.

Worth my mentioning that before the Crouch End shop was Burtons, from I think the 1930s, it was a Post Office Telephones outlet.

Had my wedding suit tailored by Burtons back in 1978.

I am member of the Victorian Sweatshop Forum. VSS. We love and collect antique and vintage sewing machines (no plastic mechanical parts).  While doing some research I came across this which is an interesting watch.

Originally from Palmers Green I remember Burtons at the Triangle near or next to Woolies.

Thanks for that, Richard. I've added it to my watchlist.

Thanks Hugh. Very interesting for people of a certain generation and younger folk wanting a to know a bit of local history.
