Sorry I can't quite place this in todays Middle Lane. Looks more like Campsbourne area

Either Chestnut or Palace Road on the left.

Oh yes that makes sense, probably that estate by Rokesly school replaced the older style house/s on the right.

Indeed - and the names of the houses were taken by the roads. 

Looking at the 1895 map, I think the photo was taken just south of Palace Road. On the right is Elm House with, on the extreme right of the photo, the start of the footpath that ran alongside Elm House's grounds and up to the well.
