Trams were just before my era. However, I did have a tenuous connection with them when they eventually dug up the old creosoted wooden paving blocks for resurfacing the roads. Dad bought a load of them for the fire and they were piled up in the back garden. They were great building blocks to play with until eventually all used up, albeit somewhat messy!

Just along that first bit of Linzee was the materials storage site for the resurfacing. This was guarded by the night watchman, with his canvas shelter, hurricane lamp and coke brazier.

Comment by Hugh on April 28, 2023 at 10:25: It's amazing how long wood-block roads survived. Back in 2012, part of a surviving wood-block road was found by workmen in N22. I added a post about it, and, I'd forgotten, in my enthusiasm also prepared a pdf all about wooden roads.

They would have ridden that tram

Looking at Google maps I see that the beautiful houses still proudly stand.
