Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Seven Sisters Road, (Old Woodberry Down), 1920s
This image of 321 Seven Sisters Road shows a grand old house with a garden that used to stretch down to the New River.
It was part of pre-war Woodberry Down that comprised mainly large middle class housing. Some of those on Woodberry Down itself were far grander than this.
Only a quarter of a century after this photo was taken the whole area had been redeveloped as the Woodberry Down Estate.

Here's an advert for the sale of a near neighbour of the house above. This was pubished in the London Daily News on 28 January 1911.
The snippet of the 1893 OS map below shows its exact location.
And below is an advert from the Hackney and Kingsland Gazette on 15 July 1885. I'm not certain exactly which house this was.

If you've ever wondered why gates like the one shown at the front of the house, have a high part one end, and a low part the other end, here's the answer. The high part was made like that, so someone on a horse could open and close the gate without getting off the horse. The high part would be the opposite end to the hinges; this gate has been hung the wrong way round, but perhaps deliberately for aesthetic reasons.
