Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Whilst this postcard doesn't give much visual information that's additional to other images already on the site, its title does suggest that the pub had become an established way-finding landmark, such that it had given it's name to a 'corner'. This makes its adoption as a Tube station name in the 1930s more understandable.

Any thoughts about the structure behind the lamp post on the right? The 1893 OS map shows a small structure on the pavement outside the boundaries of Marlborough House, but it doesn't look contemporaneous with the House. The street structure looks more Regency to me whilst the house is mid-Victorian.

Looks like a portico, or elegant entrance

There might have been control points built on the new road in the 1830's. It could be a pointsman (security) hut.

It's not unsimilar to toll booths.

It's not dissimilar to toll booths as this photo of the Manor House turnpike building and this one of the Turnpike Lane building show. It certainly looks closer to them in age than it does to the house.

I too wondered if it might have served some sort of security function. What's a 'control booth', Stephen?

(Adding this comment I was amazed to find that I hadn't previously added the Manor House toll booth pic).

John, a portico was my initial thought too, but because its style predates the age of the house, I had cause to wonder.

My sentiments are with the poor horse.
