Was surprised to see this out of my window today.

I think we have one of those in a neighbours garden. My mother-in-law thought they were medlars rather than persimmons though. I'm completely ignorant about such things though! Can you do anything with either?

I've no personal experience, but here's a reference for medlars and one for persimmons.

I'd guess persimmon. We have a large medlar tree with wide waxy leaves, and thick, very brittle branches. Not like this picture at all. If your neighbour's tree is a persimmon, ask for some of the fruit before the birds and insects get to it - it's delicious. Medlars aren't bad either. Our Italian neighbours like them!
