Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This week is clearly Hornsey Chimney week. At the weekend we had the electricity works chimney. Now in the background of this postcard image you can see the chimney for the dust destructor which stood the municipal yard to the north of the high street and used to incinerate Hornsey's rubbish.

'Destructor' is term is applied to a battery of high-temperature furnaces constructed for disposing, by burning, of household and town refuse.

The Hornsey destructor was built in 1888/9 and opened in December of 1889. The article below is from the Islington Gazette on 21 May 1890. (Note the familiar resident moans about refuse collection!)
