Comment by StephenBln on September 8, 2010 at 14:49: On the left, just about in view is 'The Corner Picture House'. Two shops along was the 'Home Made Sweets' shop where hand made sweets were produced in full view of the public.. Wonderful Humbugs and 'Stick-Jaw' could be bought there and the street smelt of warm ainiseed. The Corner closed around 1960? but the Home Made Sweet shop survived until the area was compulsory purchased by the council..

My Grandparents and Mother ran a business not far away on Seven Sisters Road.

The bus must be a 39/130 Chingford- Edmonton- Camden Town - Victoria - Southfields or even a route 29 working out from Tottenham Garage which also used to work it..

Comment by Laurence Marson on September 10, 2010 at 14:05: The home made sweey shop was owned by a Mr Pasty I was in Cubs with his son ( 125th north London) also along the parade was The Hutchins bike shop ( curly forks) and the Doms ice cream shop.

Comment by pamish on September 10, 2010 at 21:20: The pic must be after 1909/10 when the steel-framed store was built - the rest of the dept store had been created by gradually buying up the Victorian houses along the High Road. It's unusual to see this point of view, I have loads of postcards now of the older parade but they are all from about five or ten years earlier.

Comment by StephenBln on September 11, 2010 at 2:25: Timeframe: judging by the bus (LGOC K type) and the hat (right), as well as the long dress (left) I'd say this photo was taken about 1919/23. I'd love to believe that the woman pushing the pram is my grandmother pushing my mother.. who knows.. ?
I've also got a photo taken here in 1910 and as 'pamish' says, it's looking towards Tottenham

I loved the overhead money collection system where the shop assistant would put the cash in a small container, screw it to the overhead delivery system and then fire it by a ctapult to the main cash desk in the middle of the store, all great fun when you are a kid.
