Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Howard Boxall's Shop 167 Turnpike Lane, c. 1905

This shop was on the south side of Turnpike Lane between Wightman Road and the railway bridge, in a terrace demolished in the 1970s.

The Boxalls seem to have taken over Sawney's newsagents in 1903 (just a year before your photo was taken - see below) and run the business till at least 1937, with Katherine’s name “appearing over the door” from the early/mid 1930s. She was still running the shop up to the War.

.

Thanks to descendant Ralph Dalton for the photo and for his permission to publish it.

I've previously published a series photos of that section of Turnpike Lane taken by commercial photographer Alfred Braddock here. No 167 just makes it onto the right hand edge of Fig. 3.
