Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Manor House turnpike toll booth, circa 1865

The toll booth stood at thesouth-western corner of the intersection of Green Lanes and Seven Sisters Road near the Manor House Tavern (pictured). The picture is shot looking north east along Seven Sisters Road.

During about the first half of the 19th century his booth took tolls for both travel along Green Lanes and Seven Sisters Road. Turnpike roads were abolished in 1864.

Comment by Hugh on May 20, 2016 at 14:38: This toll gate was set up in 1789 as part of the Stamford Hill and Green Lanes Turnpike Trust. It lasted until the end of the turnpike system in 1872.
