Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Whilst I cannot give the exact date of this photo, I am certain that it was taken before 1883.

I have seen drawings of the church interior before. But this is the first photo I have seen.

Are those chair down the centre? And if so how did anyone get to them? They also seem lower than the pews on either side.

They are 'box' or rented pews only for the use of wealthy parishoners - the rest would be a free for all for everyone else.

The box pews are to the side - the aisle seems rammed with chairs - how does anyone get in or move around?

Richard, it looks to me like there’s a narrow passage way  to the left of the chairs. But it does look very crowded. One assumed that it was a popular church or had been set up for a particularly well attended event.

Perhaps those low down seats are for those living off the parish funds/workhouse..? In order for them 'to be looked down upon'..
