Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The fate of the Rest Cartwight Coliseum organ: Hornsey Journal 1981

Article from the Hornsey Journal, March 6th, 1981. The (late) Journalist and Author, Barry St-John Nevill, also acted as Agent for the famous International Concert Organist, Carlo Curley, and was largely responsible for organising the hugely popular and successful summer series of organ concerts at Alexandra Palace, seasons 1977-1979. Sadly, Barry died in tragic circumstances some years ago. It was he who originally sent me this newspaper cutting.

I spoke to Mr. Protopapus at the time, but he told me that he had already decided to donate the instrument to a School in Kent. The rest is history, as the saying goes...until today, that is, when I discovered the organ's present whereabouts, languishing in store at Hall Place, Bexley.

What the future holds for this historic and unique instrument nobody knows, but wouldn't it be marvellous if it were to be restored to working order and installed in a public venue. A fitting tribute indeed to to the multi-talented and underrated organ builder, Mr. Rest Cartwright of Harringay.
