The Keevans where my parents used to buy my Stationers' school uniform, (1947-1951) was on the corner of Hillfield Avenue and Hornsey High St. The clothing was so expensive, it eventually became unaffordable.

This will no doubt be familiar to you then, Alan. Not sure of the date - 1940s / 50s? The shop occupied 84- 90 HighStreet.

Had to go there for collars and studs for my best white shirts.

My father used them for his detachable collars. They came in a box and he would have them sent off to a firm called 'Wembley' for cleaning and starching every week. I bet he got sod all support from the Met for his smartness! The idea was that the cotton shirt might be worn 2-3 days but the collar lasted just one due to the fog/smog/smoke. When attached collars became the thing they led to the invention and adoption of the home washing machine.
