These were brilliant locomotives that gave great service for many years. I had my first ride on one from Kings Cross to Cambridge in March 1971 and over the next few years drove a lot of them in different parts of the country. They were comfortable and quiet, compared to other classes. Powerful enough to work any train and even used them to shunt coaches in Hornsey Carriage Sidings. There was a large angled piece of metal inside the cab just behind the drivers seat that you could bang your head on whilst looking out to the rear when shunting and a cooker in the cab which I often used to make tea or heat up a tin of Irish stew!
