Sadly as a Hornsey Journal hack in the 60s I had reason to know very well why this bridge over the A1 got its unhappy sobriquet. I attended a couple of inquests at North London Coroners Court (Dr Robert Ian Milne in the chair and Dr Francis Camps, famous pathologist giving evidence).
At tea and rolls break I asked Dr Camps why the bridge was so popular - he opined that being over the A1 it was a very public statement of one's wish to die. He was ever a very pragmatic man....
I disagree with him, it's just a very definite way to die. If you throw yourself in front of a train you might just lose an arm or a leg.
He was saying it was very public.
