Hampden Road Flood, 1907

Fascinating that we see there seems originally to have been some shops or a pub, half way along Hampden Road

The buildings I think were shops or a pub were in the location where these four houses now stand:

Comment by irene rose neil on March 12, 2013 at 18:44: I remember a small grocers by the alley Archibalds the lady had white hair...they called her snowball.there was a wartime childrens nursery opposite will try to find a photo . and an off-licence at the top end of Hampden,,wonderful site well done

Comment by Richard Woods on March 13, 2013 at 14:13: I was in Frobisher from 1946 to 1964 and I do not recall it. But there was a bomb site so maybe that was it. If so it would have made a bit of a story when it was hit - anyone know what it was called?

Comment by Richard Woods on March 13, 2013 at 15:20: Been looking at this picture and am not convinved it is on the Ladder at all. Those are solid rows of THREE storey houses and these were fairly rare in N8. There are some new houses on the old bomb sites in Hampden Road but the older houses either side do not seem to match those in this picture. There was a Lord Hampden in Hampden Road Holloway but even there the houses are not right. The Hampdens elsewhere seem to be in 20s and 30s housing areas which might be right as the houses in this piocture do look very much older than the Ladder estate and may have been cleared. Still looking - anyone able to see Hornsey Journal (shut I know; my old paper) or Tottenham Herald files for flood in 1907?

Comment by Hugh on March 13, 2013 at 15:46: Look at Google street view. The original houses seemed to me to be an exact match. They were but around 1880. There are other pics on the site of floods in Turnpike Lane & Green Lanes in the same period.

Comment by Richard Woods on March 13, 2013 at 17:08: It was the Google street view that suggested it might be elsewhere but I have gone back and the people standing on the wall (to reach the pub?) are actually the west side of The Passage. So looking at Google again the houses opposite are OK; its just the old lens that is making them stand too tall as it were. So I capitulate! And the passage opf course came to cover the major drains for the area - maybe the flood did us all a favour! What is also interesting is that at no time can I ever remember talk of a pub in Hampden Road between 46 and 64. But it makes sense for two reasons - the station was/is at the top of Hampden and it would have been a witty jest to put a rare Ladder pub up the road from Willoughby Lane Methodist Church!

The disappearing offie referred to is interesting - top of Hampden was the fags and newspaper shop where I (at 14) first bought my packets of five Woodbines!

Comment by irene rose neil on March 13, 2013 at 18:41: the offie was on the corner of Hampden and Wightman always had a wonderful range of lemonades.there was also a smaller newsagents I seem to remember called Tomalins..also Richard do you remember Mary Pritchard who pushed an old pram laden with fish boxes from the fishmongers in Turnpke she lived in Frobisher near the alley back in the 40 s
