Oh I remember Hall's dept store, and the former bank to the right.

I loved Hall's the drapers, such beautiful display window cases which you could walk right around, if I remember correctly. My mother, who was a dressmaker, used to shop there often during the 60s and early 70s for all sorts of sewing sundries. They had wonderful polished mahogany counters and an overhead cash railway system for sending payments to the cashier's desk and returning change and receipts. It's a tragedy that the council allowed the destruction of that marvellous shop front - bleedin' philistines!

"A cash railway" - something like this?

It fascinated me too as a lad, in our local drapers in the early '60s. Thanks for the reminder!

Gordon, Lamson were still going in the Seventies. I had a holiday job in a department store one year when I was about 16. They used to have an airtube sytem for sending money up to the cash office. I remember being told to put the cylinder into the Lamson tube.

A quick Google found this video of the system I remember.
