Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This is marked on the 1895 OS map as the The Drinking Fountain. It was opposite the Manor House Gate. So this image was taken looking W-SW about 30 or so metres inside Manor House Gate towards The Avenue (the long straight road running parallel to Seven Sisters Road).

Although the fountain survived the two wars and was still showing on the OS map of the mid 1950s, at some point after that, it was removed.

Evidence survives, in the form of granite bases of two smaller fountains in the park. They were probably funded by the Metropolitan Cattle Trough and Drinking Fountains Association. One survivor is "in the centre of the park at the south-west side of the old reservoir". The other is "on north side of the bridge that crosses the New River". (Descriptions courtesy of mdfcta.co.uk).

In 1876 an article in the North Middlesex Chronicle included the following, "The superintending architect of the Metropolitan Board of Works has been instructed to have the drinking fountains in Finsbury Park repaired where necessary." So there were at least some fountains in the park from very early on.

In 1878 the Parks Committee of Board approved three more fountains for the park ( Morning Advertiser ). So, it seems that at one point the park was very well endowed as far as drinking fountains were concerned.
