Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Turnpike Lane / Hornsey Park Road Junction circa 1905

After very recently finding a picture of a very different looking Turnpike Lane just to the west of this, I was surprised to see this picture turn up giving a better view of the houses on the corner on Turnpike and Hornsey Park Roads that were demolished in the 1970s as the Council made its first attempt to turn Wightman and Hornsey Park Roads into the Wood Green Bypass.

Photographer Alfred Braddock, who took this photo, lived at 120 Turnpike Lane in 1911-12. This was the middle of the three houses, two down from the junction with Hornsey Park Road and just a couple of dozen yards west of the junction with Wightman Road.

As a very young child living in Westfield Rd, Hornsey, my doctor was also Dr Barry-Smith. I guess he called all the kids this but being called poppet was kind of special.
