Bartons was the major department store in Wood Green from the start of the 20th century until it was closed down by a fire in 1968. The railway bridge across Wood Green High Road used to carry a similar advert.
See a contemporary photo of Bartons here and read it's history here.

I remember as a child in the 70's during the summer holidays getting a train from Harringay stadium to Barking and then changing on to another train from Barking to Southend.
You can still do that - from Harringay Green Lanes, get the overground (with brand new air conditioned trains) and change at Barking for the train to Southend
I lived in Roseberry Gardens, but as was quite normal it is obscured in the murk! Loving that close to the Stadium meant that I spent many a Saturday night at the Stock Cars. Happy days.
This side and on the corner of Umfreville in the 60s was Derek Newport's electrical shop within which my first love worked as cashier. Many a time I would meet her on my regrettably still L-plated motorbike to walk her home. Like you did back then.
i live on umfreville road since 1967
Hi Peter, I lived atNo 3 Roseberry Gardens from 1944 until 1951/52 when we moved to grand parade on green lanes just a few doors up from the Salisbury hotel. Great times at stock cars meetings and speedway racing, ice hockey and Tom Arnold’s circus and of course for my dad greyhound racing, great times, now live in Sydney/Aust since 1963
Hi Andrew - living at no.3 you would have been in the distance from down at the other end! I was only hatched in 1951 but had lots of journeys along Grand Parade for the daily shopping expeditions that were carried out in those days before fridges, etc. We left for the rural wilds of Enfield in 1968.
