Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

On the right is the entrance to the Arena and Stadium. At the time this photo was taken, the Stadium was probably still operating (closed 1987) and the Arena had only recently been demolished (1978).

On the right is the infamous Harringay Sauna. on the corner of Lothair Road. where true to the famed hospitality of Harringay's hospitality outlets, extras were apparently always on the menu.

Prior to the current retail park there was a magnet kitchens store and some smaller industrial units if I remember correctly.

Wasn't there also a DIY store - Texas Homecare that became Homebase?

Before the latest redevelopment, a part of the Stadium wall remained just east of these home stores. Behind them, to the south, the old Cyprus Laundry building still survived.

Yes, Dermot, I remember walking along the side of Texas to Magnet, passing on the left  some small shops or industral units, then I think, walking left from Magnet round the back of the postal unit and coming to a shop for traders only where shop-keepers could buy supplies to resell in their own shops--I wonder if that could be the Abbott on the signboard. The dog track was operative at the time. About 1980.

Before The Sauna, after the War, the place was called the Greyhound Cafe, My Mum's family had the business for years, she worked in the Cafe, i think in the 1950s, she met Dad who worked in The Arena, directly opposite. The rest is history, as they say.

Is there anyone out there with any pics or info, on the buildings history, I recently worked near by and couldn’t believe how the whole area has changed after many decades.

Camden Graphics, Sorting Office and Delivery (Royal Mail) and Express Dairy were at the Retail Park at that time too.
