Hampden was unusual in having the three-storey properties which were usually flats. I had always assumed this was because it was in easy walking distance of the railway (top of the road of course) and thus suited those who wanted a flat and worked in the City. Maybe Hugh knows more?

No idea, I'm afraid. I couldn't find Hampden in the 1891 census. But in the 1901 census, it does appear that many addresses had two or three households, confirming that perhaps they were built to be occupied as flats, or at least were occupied as multiple household dwellings from the outset.

I wonder if the builder of Station Mansions also built these larger houses and intended for them to be occupied as flats?

Bit of a grim old pic but look how neat and tidy the hedging is kept.
