Comment by Richard Woods on January 22, 2016 at 7:53: As an ex-gasman I am amazed they are still there. Gasholders have not been needed for years - computer controlled valves do the job. But back in the day the holder was vital locally to provide the pressure for the gas to reach homes. It is true that on some Sundays gasmen would stand on the dome of the holder to keep the pressure up to cook Sunday lucnh!

Comment by irene rose neil on June 17, 2016 at 8:34: I remember the man and the gaslight by the passage in Frobisher .In the 40s our house had electric however I remember the jutting bumps of the sealed off gas fittings .

Comment by Richard Woods on June 17, 2016 at 17:48: Sealed off? My wife's family moved into a house in Muswell Hill and they were NOT - when the gas was turned on for the cooker... happily they smelt it quick enough!

Comment by John Shulver on October 17, 2019 at 18:31: I remember the house I was born in (and lived in till 1970) was served by gas lights. We weren't connected to mains electric till around mid 50's I suppose. The little gas bulbs (mantles) were so fragile and easily broken. They gave out a lovely warming light and a gentle hissing sound. Our house was in Harringay Road.

It was McMullens Brewery Tap, and was all timber and sawdust with genuine gas lighting inside and out. It looked fantastic especially at night. Very popular with tourists from all over the world. An American gentleman made a point of congratulating me on my "quaint" pub one lunchtime followed by a comment that " I thought y,all wooda got e-lectricity by now." By the way that was the 1990's in case of confusion.
