I've been googling for most of the day re gas lights in harringay! Thank you Richard Woods!! I lived on stanhope gardens from 1958 - I just couldn't work out if I'd actually seen the gasman lighting up the lamps or if I'd imagined it!

Penny, did you read this ? http://www.harringayonline.com/photo/hornsey-brewery-circa-1910?xg_...  Presumably the Wood Green gasworks was the gas supplier ? 2 of the gas holders are still there - but not for much longer !

As an ex-gasman I am amazed they are still there. Gasholders have not been needed for years - computer controlled valves do the job. But back in the day the holder was vital locally to provide the pressure for the gas to reach homes. It is true that on some Sundays gasmen would stand on the dome of the holder to keep the pressure up to cook Sunday lucnh!

I remember the man and the gaslight by the passage in Frobisher .In the 40s our house had electric however I remember the jutting bumps of the sealed off gas fittings .

Sealed off? My wife's family moved into a house in Muswell Hill and they were NOT - when the gas was turned on for the cooker... happily they smelt it quick enough!

I remember the house I was born in (and lived in till 1970) was served by gas lights.  We weren't connected to mains electric till around mid 50's I suppose.  The little gas bulbs (mantles) were so fragile and easily broken.  They gave out a lovely warming light and a gentle hissing sound.  Our house was in Harringay Road.

Great recollection Richard Woods of blokes standing on gas holders Sunday lunchtimes !  I owe very many thanks to them then for ensuring my little belly got filled.
