Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

An unusual view of the Lanes back in the day. It was taken looking north east from a point near the junction of Allison Road with Green Lanes. When it was taken, on the plots of land just to the north of the junction of Green Lanes and Coilna Road, there stood a pair of large semi-detatched houses. This plot is now occupied by the TfL Underground air shaft/power building.

On the extreme left of the building, you can just make out the buildings that once stood on the plot next to the Church and now occupied by the Turkish Bank building. You can just see the pointed tops to the facades. Before looking at this photo, I hadn't even thought about fact that the bank building is new. It looks like there used to be a pair of Victorian shop houses there

I can slightly remember the buildings next to the church in the 1950's.  I remember large windows possibly a car show room and then smaller shops. On the corner of the next road was a Dolls hospital (a toy shop really but the man would mend any toys).

I love this pic of my old Green Lanes though I only knew it from 1950 on.   And what a seemingly well turned out group of kids in foreground right.

'orrible !!  Only good thing about that pic is the sun shining.  Other than that it looks lifeless in comparison.

This is probably a fairer comparison, John. You have to bear in mind that the Google shot below was taken in February of last year. So no vegetation is showing. Notwithstanding the loss of the chestnut tree in front of Mountview  Court, a summer shot would be kinder.

I believe the single storey structure with the surgery sign was our rent office in the 60's. If not it was very similar. I remember it being a very somber and gloomy place. Very old fashioned even for then. I wonder what they would have made of a direct debit in there.

Morning Hugh. the our was my Mum & Dad, and we lived in 57 Beresford rd. They moved there in about 1938 and we moved abroad in 1968. the times I remember going to the rent office would have been 59/60.

Did they run an estate agency or something similar?

Sorry if I confused you there. when I said our rent office I meant the office where we payed our rent. My Dad built swimming pools and Mum worked for Kleinerts in Moorgate.
