Electric (Public) Transport in North London 1946

One year after the end of World war Two.

Trolleybuses had replaced all but three Tram routes in North London before the conversion scheme was brought to a premature close in 1940.

After the war, it was decided to replace the remaining trams with diesel buses which, although running on imported diesel fuel, were more econmical than more Trolleybuses that used home produced electricity. This was of course, before the Suez Crisis of 1956 and British companies still owned many of the Oil fields.

The decision to convert to buses had ramifications for Harringay. The replacement bus 171 was extended beyond the tram terminus at Manor House to run to Tottenham (Bruce Grove). Thus providing Harringay with a direct service to the administration centre of the Borough of Tottenham at High Cross.
In the earlier pre-war plan.. It had been decided to replace the 33 tram with a '533 trolleybus' service which would have terminated at Newington Green.. which would have meant a cut in services for Harringay.
