The Fox Pub, West Green Road c1890

This building stood on the corner of West Green Road and Vincent Road. It seems to have been a beer shop (possibly a beer house), rather than a pub.

The "Branch" on the sign was for the Branch family who had been running "The Fox" since the 1850s when former gardener George Branch and his wife arrived from Finsbury in the City. First run as a grocer and beer shop (i.e. off-sales only). It had become a beer house by 1880 (on sales and off sales, beer only). After George died in 1888, his wife, Elizabeth ran the premises with her eldest son Frank until her death in 1907. The Fox stayed in the family under Frank, then Alice and then William till at least 1926, marking seventy years in the same family. Probably shortly after this date, it was rebuilt and opened as a public house.

It is marked below on the 1873 Ordnance Survey map (surveyed 1863-69).
