Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This photo was added to my page by member Geoff Baker with the following message:

I am attaching the photo of my Great Grandfather’s shop 449/451 Green Lanes Harringay (bottom of Duckett).

Samuel Gent Baker started the shop in 1896 (+/- 2 years) and my grandfather - Ernest Guy Baker took it on until his death in 1936 then May Helen Helen Baker continued on until her retirement

If you have access to any other Baker references I would be really keen to know

Thanks

Geoff Baker

Love those lamps.

Judging by the ladies hats, I would think it's earlier than the 1930s.. A rough guess ca. 1921.

It seems strange today that the shop windows had to be illuminated from outside - rather than inside..

Thanks Steve. I was hoping you'd come on and do your forensic analysis. Perhaps Geoff will be able to confirm that for us.

Love it - it's really beautiful. What's on that corner today? Oh, imagine Grand Parade fully restored to what must be it's former glory. Now, that would be something to work towards!

Yes, I think 1920s also. I seem to recall my mother 'window shopping' that splendid emporium in the late 1920s.

The 1948 Post Office Street Directory lists 449 Green Lanes as Barclays Motors, motor car dealers and 451 as Alfred H Warner, draper.

@Arthur - Window shopping eh? BTW, that isn't by any chance you in the white outfit on this photo?

To answer your question, Anette - it has now lost all its detailing and become the Erbiller Jewellery shop.

Well, I'm thinking -from the scooter pics, this building would later become Coburn & Hughes motorbike shop/repairs ?? Just a thought. Somewhere near Greenaways stationers?

Geoff, I can find your family's shop listed from 1902 to 1937. I'm missing the directories for 1899-1901 and 1938-1940. So it may extend a year or two at either end of that range.
