The 'Fish' venue for the renowned Wood Green Jazz Club which can be seen in the film Momma Don't Allow (Wood Green Jazz Club 1956) taken a couple of years before I started going there. The film can be seen in two parts on youtube:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je24WUx7EcE

Used to go there fairly regularly, initially for Trad Jazz nights (was that Tuesdays?) and then Rhythm n Blues nights (Wed/Thurs?).  Saw some top acts there around mid 60's including some black American old blues men.  Loved The Pretty Things and The Downliners Sect !!  Never knew "Led Zeppelin (formerly Yardbirds)" !   Great pic John...........what was your address on that membership card ?

In 1955 when I was a kid of 15 my brother and a few mates would get the bus or sometimes walk from Palmers Green to the jazz club. At the time I had aspirations to be a jazz clarinet player. I was inspired by hearing Monty Sunshine playing on 'Bobby Shaftoe' with the Barber band. Still a favourite to this day. I had bought the record which was a 78rpm Columbia disc with a blue label. One of my mates at the time was Brian Bennett who went on to become the drummer with the Shadows and was a great jazz drummer in his own right.  As we were all under age we used to lounge around outside and listen to the bands.  Sometimes we were able sneak in and get lost among the crowd in the dark smokey atmosphere particularly if Barber was on. I remember Lonnie Donegan doing Rock Island Line. Another band I remember was Mick Mulligan with George Melly.  I was warned about Melly Liking young boys so I kept out his way.  Some years later as an adult I was in the area and saw the Brian Auger Trinity with Julie Driscoll at the club.  Fond memories .

Oh yes Richard, Monty and 'Bobby Shaftoe'.  My older Brother introduced me to Trad and Wood Green Jazz Club early 60's I spose.  He had a great EP, remember them?, from '56, which I inherited when he emigrated in '62. Chris Barber, Monty, Ken Collier, Acker Bilk.....great stuff. I've seen all of them. Sadly never got to see Lonnie Donegan.

Brian Bennett eh !!  Must rate as one of the best name drops on HoL.
