Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Thanks to Irene Neil for sending us this photo. It shows May's shop on Westbury Avenue circa 1946. Irene points out the queue for bread outside Webbers bakery. The man is Irene's father George Withey.

Thank you Irene Neil for this photograph. Our family has been looking for something like this for some time now.

Here's why....

My wife’s Great Grandfather, Joseph Webber, was a baker. He & his wife Emma ran a bakery, right beside Turnpike Lane tube station. Mary, being their daughter would also help out in the shop. Turnpike Lane tube station is at the top of Langham Road which is also where MY Grandparents (& Mum) lived during the 1940’s & 1950’s.

Since Webber’s was the closest local bakery, my Nan & later my Mum, were regularly in Webber’s to buy bread for the family. So my Nan & Mum would have been chatting and buying bread from my wife’s Grandmother, and Great Grandparents, a few times a week, for years in the 1940’s & 50’s…..!!! This is 40+ years before my Wife & I met each other in Canada!

My wife was born in Canada, and I moved to Canada in the early 1980’s. We met here in 1990 and only discovered this amazing coincidence in 1995 when both sides of our respective families got together for our University Graduation celebration. The table at the restaurant went VERY quiet when my Mum’s conversation with my wife’s Grandmother got down to where they had lived when in the UK. The areas they were describing kept getting smaller and smaller and smaller until….WEBBER’s BAKERY!

The craziest “It’s a VERY small world” story I’ve ever heard!
