I used to buy platform tickets at Wood Green/Alexandra Palace/Alexandra Park BR station and Kings Cross in my train spotting days.

@ Richard Woods. Depends how you measure it but It used to cost 1d to use a toilet in a station: now it costs 30p = 72d.

Inflation calculator suggest today's 30p would have a buying power of about 7.5 d in 1950. So spending a penny was a lot cheaper than today!
