Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Finsbury Park West Indian Carnival, Stroud Green Road, August 1978

The wisdom of the web tells me that in 1978 there was an attempt to move the Notting Hill Carnival to Finsbury Park with the formation of the well-funded Finsbury Park West Indian Carnival fronted by Pastor Morris.

The Black Youth Movement called on people to boycott the new carnival, which they saw as an attempt to disperse Notting Hill Carnival participants and ultimately prevent Carnival from taking place. The event ran only until 1982.

The photo was taken looking south along Stroud Green Road, just to the north of the junction with Perth Road. J. H Smith Chemist on the right was at number 61, now the premises for Asian fusion restaurant Itto.

Below is an attempt to show the same scene today using Google Street View.
