" In 1974 two local churches with distinguished histories came together as one Church. They were Park Chapel Congregational Church and Ferme Park Baptist Church. As the new Church was born, so work began on our current buildings on the site of the old Baptist Church. "

 

So possibly corner of Ferme Park Road and Weston Park ?

Ferme Park Baptist church was formed largely through the efforts of John Batey, minister at Broadway hall. Land had been bought at the corner of Weston Park and Ferme Park Road in 1888 and a chapel, with schoolrooms and seating 630, was opened in 1889. A building on the plan of a Greek cross, seating 1,250 and with marble baptistery and vestries, was opened in 1900, when the older one was converted into halls and a flat. Ferme Park, which administered many societies, had Hornsey's largest Baptist attendances in 1903, with 1,052 on one morning and 1,036 in the evening. (fn. 35) Members, who belonged to the London Baptist Association in 1928, (fn. 36) numbered 1,205 in 1914 and 1,029 in 1939. From 1973 they worshipped in Park chapel, belonging to the United Reformed Church, while awaiting the rebuilding of their own church, which was demolished in 1974.

So it looks as if the old picture is showing the corner of Drylands Rd and Weston Park, looking East

The Baptists must have owned the whole block from Drylands to Ferme Park road and built a block of flats where the map says Bapt. Chap. and the new church is where it says Inst.

This post links up to a Facebook item in which members of the congregation reminisce. Demolition of a chapel to build flats is ever topical given the current headlong rush to build dwellings , apparently without the need for planning permission, on any suitable brownfield site under a zonal system.

Hello -I am a brand new member (absolutely love this site!) and lived in 155, Ferme Park Road, with brother Paul, Mum and Grandma Miller. The Baptist Church in the photo was on the corner of Ferme Park Road and Weston Park. The girl's group Campfire Girls met there. If I remember rightly Dr Downton ( a real old-fashioned Doctor) lived opposite the church on the corner of Weston Park and Ferme Park Road?

Grandma died in 1961 so Paul and I had to leave Crouch End. We both live in Norwich now, me with memories and he with his family Norma (Hewitt)
