I remember needles.  They came in different sizes.

We were still using steel needles on an old Sobell rolltop gramophone as we still called them. But it was a bit innovative as it also had a radio in it - Long, Medium and about 6 Short Wave bands. The needles wore the records badly and when the fibre needles came in we switched to them - but they showed up the damage on the older 78s.

Anyone recall if my memory is right snd there was a Chappells music shop on the right hand side of Wood Green High Road beyond Bon Marche? It sold shet music and my father was frequenter. His horror at the youth of the 50s was compounded when I bought Rock and Roll! Elvis of course but mostly in fact Buddy Holly (lamented). And I expected to play them on HIS radiogram.! An Armstrong from Holloway.

If you look at the attachment to this post, Richard, a shop called Elmers is mentioned. It sounds like it could be the one you're thinkig of.
