Dairyman Charles Freegard and his hand-pulled milk cart c1905

George Freegard was born in 1850 into an agricultural labouring family in WIltshire. By 1881, he was running a 144 acres farm near his place of birth. We might assume that it was a leased property. At some point in the middle of the first decade of the 20th century, her sold up and moved his family to Tottenham, He set up a dairy at 175 High Road, South Tottenham, on the corner of a now disappeared Road called Highweek Road. It was on the west side of the road about 200 metres south of the junction with Seven Sisters Road.

At around the time of this photo, George was about 55 years old. He had six children, the oldest of whom, Charles Henry, helped him run the business. At the time of this photo Charles was about 27. So, I'm guessing that the man pictured is the son rather than the father.

George died in 1921, but the diary continued under the Freegard name at least until the mid-thirties.
