Yard started to look a little sad and empty compared to its heyday; spent many an hour watching the trains and the world go by up there!

You can see the gas holders in Hornsey Park Road from here and also to the left of them the tall chimney at Barratts sweet factory. If my memory serves me correct there was originally 3 gas holders but at some point they took one away to leave the 2 that were taken away around 2016/2017.

Round about 4 p.m. every weekday in the later 50s you could have found me and a bunch of Stationers boys cruising along the hog's back. We would sometimes catch the Scot as it steamed through Harringay West 10 minutes out of Kings Cross. And sometimes, if it was murky, we laid pennies on the line and crept down later to recover the often fractured but sometime only bent coins. Joshua, Son of Nunn (or S.C.Nunn, Esq, head of Stationers) had occasion to warn of expulsion for any boy caught over the wire on the Hog's Back.

Actually he looks a dead ringer for 'Donkey' Bray, senior maths and deputy head of Stationers, which closed a few years after this fabulous  picture was taken.

Tony, I wonder if that chimney isn't the chimney for the refuse destructor. It looks a bit too far west of the gas holders to be the Barratts one.

Thinking about it Barratts was only just up the road from the gas holders so you're right. Looking at the angle of this picture I would guess Barratts is directly behind the gas holders as we look at it. I remember as a child looking out of the window of our flats and seeing two tall chimneys, one being Barratts and the other was probably at the nearby caxton chocolate factory.

Photo was taken where Chettle Court is today. Hog’s Back is now built up with Ridge and Mountview Roads.

Me bruvver used to take me there on his bike there to watch the trains..
