Not, not just you. Judging by this photo, it definitely looked more groomed and less tatty back then, but let's not get too rose-tinted: who's to say how welcoming the staff at Yardley's would have been if your face didn't fit.

I just checked on Yardley's. In the 1937 Kelly's, it shows a Yardley's wine merchant. It seems to have been a successful multiple with branches all over London and beyond. In 1938, if you weren't near to a store, you could have ordered your Xmas champagne with them by mail order.

Route 41 still stops at the same place today. The 'RTW' type buses like the one seen coming towards the camera ran on the 41 from 0ctober 1949 until Feb 1964, then replaced by Routemasters. On the far right is an entrance to the tube station from the former tram loading island, latterly used by buses on routes 217 and 231, one of which- an 'RT' type- is seen heading away from the camera.

Yes, the bus island, as I recall it, was covered and had seating, much appreciated during rainy weather. I recall two of these in the middle of the road, unless the second was on the pavement outside of the former Wellington pub in Turnpike Lane, but I think my memory is accurate. From memory, there used to be five sets of steps to access Turnpike Lane tube to reduce the need to cross busy roads.

Jeremy, I don't think the RTW replacement was immediate. I think they were phased out over a decade or so. Down on the London/Surrey borderlands, I was taking an RTW to school well into the Seventies

Hugh, according to the mine of information that is 'Ian's Bus Page', the last RTW ran in London in May 1966 (on route 95), but the narrower RT type continued until April 1979...

Used to take the 41 bus towards Crouch End in the late 60s and look towards the central island view. Would plan a school escape with friends by pooling our bus fare money and wondering how far we’d get on a bus in the opposite direction!
