Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Broadway still looking reassuringly Edwardian in 1960, despite the set of moderne set of buildings to the east.

Presumably the style moderne buildings were built as part of the approach to Horsey town hall (matched, out of shot, by an identical range a few yards behind where this photo was taken from)?

Interesting that Boots the chemist occupied the same premises, even then. That's the main yellow awning slightly left of centre, on which you can make out the logo.

..and Boots even proudly flew a flag of some sort on the building above. A rather pale imitation today. It looks like they can't quite decide whether to close it down it not.

Yes, Don. the moderne buildings were part of the 'new' town hall square.

NB when was that run of Edwardian shop-fronts - now occupied by the newer 60s/70s residential build, set back from the road (Sainsbury's, Tesco, Gregg's, Specsavers etc) - demolished? Anyone know why?

That section of the terrace was demolished in the 1970s, Paul. There's more information on various photos here.

It was demolished at the end of the wrecking-ball happy period in the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies. The section of Grand Parade in Harringay that became the new Woolworths store (now Iceland) went the same way.

Who chose yellow!

Richard, I think we’re safe in guessing that choice was made by the photo lab!
