Thanks for adding the photo, Karan. I love the comparison. The flooding used to be quite regular and was related to the Stonebridge Brook which runs under Green Lanes near the bottom of Beresford Road. Thankfully, that was resolved many decades ago. I think the 2017 event was related to a burst water main.

Further on from the pic of "Children playing in flooded Harringay Road  1937":    

The road was closed off and ripped up for several weeks to install big concrete sewer pipes along it's length in order to prevent future flooding.

It provided a fantastic summertime adventure park for us kids who lived there.  And back in the day H&S barely existed so it was practically an "all areas open" playing field.

They did have an old night watchman from evening till dawn who used to huddle up in his tent/hut structure with his oil drum coke fire outside heating water for his mugs of tea and the like. We used to join him inside for a chat. He wasn't strict about security of the works but a local copper slapped me round the head once for running up a sand pile and marching me by the ear a few yards to home and presenting me totally disgraced to my dear old Mum. We used to respect the police in those days, we'd run from them if we could but if we got caught we accepted the outcome.   How things have changed !              

BUT WHAT I'D LOVE TO DISCOVER IS THE YEAR THAT THESE WORKS WERE CARRIED OUT IN.  MY FEELING IS SUMMER OF 1960.......but........??  Is there anybody out there who can nail it ?

John, I think what you're remembering is the culverting of the Stonebridge Brook. It was the cause of the flooding in that part of Harringay. The section east of Green Lanes was culverted in 1960/61. See Ceri's comment here where she provides a copy of the cover of the works order.
